Turmeric is traded on curcumin content first and appearance second. Fingers from Erode typically test between 2% and 4% curcumin while Lakadong turmeric from Meghalaya can reach 6% to 7% and commands a clear premium. Powder is quoted on a guaranteed minimum curcumin percentage.
Always ask for the curcumin basis before comparing offers. A cheap quote at 2% curcumin is not comparable to a 5% lot even if the per kilo price looks attractive.
For fingers state the variety such as Salem Erode Rajapuri or Lakadong plus polishing level whether double polished or unpolished and the acceptable percentage of broken pieces. For powder state the mesh size curcumin minimum and whether the lot is steam sterilized.
Define moisture limits clearly. Most export contracts cap moisture at 10% to 12% for fingers and 8% to 10% for powder. Higher moisture invites mold during a 30 to 40 day ocean transit.
Request a pre shipment sample and send it to an independent lab for curcumin content moisture ash acid insoluble ash and microbiology. For the USA market also test for lead chromate adulteration which remains a known risk in low grade lots.
