India Spice Exports to the USA: FDA Rules Testing & Packaging
The US imports over $1.5B of spices from India annually. Meeting FDA rules on Salmonella aflatoxins and pesticide residues is what separates cleared shipments from detained ones.
FDA facility registration & FSVP
Every Indian facility exporting food to the US must register with FDA (renewed in even years) appoint a US Agent and file Prior Notice for each shipment at least 8 hours before arrival.
The US importer is required to run an FSVP (Foreign Supplier Verification Program) expect them to ask for your Food Safety Plan hazard analysis and preventive controls documentation. Have it ready before quoting.
Testing standards that clear customs
Aflatoxin B1 must be below 20 ppb; total aflatoxins below 20 ppb (spices) per FDA action levels. Salmonella must be absent in 25g (n=5). Pesticide residues follow EPA tolerances glyphosate and chlorpyrifos are common detention triggers.
Test at an ISO 17025-accredited lab (Eurofins SGS India Intertek India). Attach the COA to the shipping documents; a scanned copy attached to the Prior Notice reduces exam risk.
Packaging & labeling
Food-grade multi-layer poly bags inside fibreboard cartons palletized with slip sheets. Include country-of-origin marking lot code best-by date and net weight in both metric and imperial.
For retail-ready private label the FDA Nutrition Facts panel (2020 format) and allergen statement must be printed on-pack not stickered post-import.
Freight
Sea freight from Nhava Sheva or Mundra to New York Savannah or LA/LB runs 22 35 days depending on routing. Reefer is not required for whole spices but ground turmeric/chili absorb humidity use desiccants and avoid deck loading during Indian monsoon (June September).
