Indian green cardamom is graded by pod size: 6mm 7mm and 8mm and above. The 8mm bold grade with deep green color earns the highest price in Gulf and European markets. Color matters as much as size because faded or yellowish pods signal age or poor curing.
State the grade precisely in the contract such as 8mm bold green with a maximum percentage of splits and lighter pods. Vague terms like premium quality are not enforceable.
Volatile oil content defines aroma and should test at 4% or above for good Kerala and Karnataka lots. Moisture should stay under 12% to prevent mold and weight loss claims at destination.
Ask for a recent lab report covering volatile oil moisture and foreign matter. For high value lots commission an independent pre shipment inspection that draws samples from random bags rather than a show sample.
The most common tricks are mixing old faded stock into fresh lots adding water weight and selling lower altitude cardamom as premium origin. Some lots are artificially colored which fails testing in the EU and USA.
Protect yourself with a sealed pre shipment sample agreed by both sides and a contract clause allowing rejection or price adjustment if the arrival lot fails to match.
Cardamom loses aroma fast when exposed to air and heat. Export lots should be packed in vacuum sealed or nitrogen flushed bags inside cartons of 5 kg to 25 kg. Avoid plain jute or PP bags for anything beyond short regional routes.
Reefer containers are not normally required but the container must be dry odor free and lined. Cardamom absorbs surrounding smells easily which can ruin a lot.
Standard documents are the invoice packing list phytosanitary certificate certificate of origin and lab analysis. Gulf buyers often require a health certificate and halal aligned handling statements.
