Cotton Yarn Export from India: Counts Quality & Sourcing Guide

Indian cotton yarn is competitive on price but quality varies widely between mills. Here is how to specify count evenness and packing so the lot that arrives matches the lot you approved.

Specify count and process

Yarn is specified by count such as Ne 20 Ne 30 or Ne 40 where a higher number means a finer yarn. State whether you need carded or combed yarn since combed yarn removes short fibers and gives better strength and evenness at a higher price.

Also state the end use knitting or weaving and whether the yarn is for single or doubled application. Knitting yarn demands tighter evenness control than weaving yarn.

Judge quality with Uster statistics

Serious mills quote quality against Uster statistics which benchmark evenness imperfections and strength against world production. Ask for the Uster percentile the mill guarantees such as 25% or 50% level.

Request a recent lab report showing count CV% strength RKM evenness CV% imperfections per kilometer and hairiness. Compare these numbers across mills rather than comparing price alone.

Control contamination

Contamination from polypropylene fibers hair and colored foreign matter is the biggest complaint in Indian yarn. Ask whether the mill uses contamination sorters at blowroom and winding and whether they guarantee contamination free or controlled contamination yarn.

For white and light shade knitting this matters more than any other parameter. Include a contamination claim clause in the contract with an agreed inspection method.

Packing and moisture

Export yarn ships on cones in cartons or pallets typically 40 to 45 kg per carton. Cones should be wrapped to prevent soiling and cartons strapped on pallets for container loading.

Moisture regain should be controlled since cotton gains weight in humid conditions. Weigh at stuffing and record the condition so weight claims at destination can be settled fairly.

Payment and first order structure

Standard terms are 20% to 30% advance with balance against documents or an irrevocable letter of credit for larger volumes. For a first order buy one container from a shortlisted mill after approving cone samples.

Elijah Global Impex supplies combed and carded cotton yarn from Ne 20 to Ne 40 from audited South Indian mills. Share your count end use and monthly volume for a mill matched offer.
