American Hardwood Lumber Export Buying Guide

Compare American hardwood offers using NHLA grade species thickness moisture tally inspection and export documentation before booking a container.

Specify species grade and thickness

Name the species and commercial grade using recognized rules. White Oak Red Oak Walnut and Hard Maple differ in color availability machining and price. State whether the order is FAS Select and Better Number 1 Common or another agreed grade.

Define nominal thickness board width and length requirements surfacing and whether stock should be random width and random length. If color or sapwood matters describe the acceptable range because standard structural grade does not always control appearance.

Check grade and tally evidence

NHLA grading measures the yield of clear cuttings available from each board. Ask for a tally showing board footage thickness grade species and bundle details. Confirm whether the price is based on gross tally net tally or surface measure.

Use an independent inspection for a first shipment or high value species. The inspection should sample grade board footage thickness moisture and species while recording bundle numbers and photographs. Keep the contract definition aligned with the grading rule used by the mill.

Control moisture and kiln quality

Agree a target moisture range suitable for the destination and final use. Measure boards across several bundles with a calibrated meter. Review kiln schedules or records where the product and market require evidence of heat treatment or drying.

Check for end splits stain warp honeycomb and case hardening. Correct moisture at loading does not protect lumber from rain or condensation later so dry storage container condition and moisture protection remain important.

Prepare phytosanitary and origin documents

Import requirements differ by destination species and level of processing. The buyer and customs broker should confirm whether a phytosanitary certificate import permit declaration or species document is required before loading.

Wood packaging used around the lumber may have separate ISPM 15 requirements. Keep the commercial invoice packing list bill of lading certificate of origin treatment records and any phytosanitary document consistent with the species quantity and shipment marks.

Plan the container and landed cost

Confirm bundle sizes container payload loading method and unloading equipment. Protect dry lumber from container condensation with suitable liners airflow planning and desiccants selected for the route. Record container condition and seal at loading.
